From idea to scale: the six stages of a technology venture

What each stage is for — and the questions worth answering before you move to the next one.

Most technology ventures move through the same six stages: Idea → Architecture → MVP → Development → Launch → Scale. Skipping a stage rarely saves time; it usually moves the work somewhere more expensive.

1. Idea

Validate the problem, the market and the business model before writing code.

  • Who has this problem, and how do they solve it today?
  • Why will they choose your product over what they already use?
  • How will the business make money?

2. Architecture

Choose the right stack, AI approach and system design for what you're building — and for what it will need to become.

  • What has to be true technically for the product to work?
  • Which parts should you build, and which should you buy or integrate?
  • Where does AI genuinely add value, and where is it a distraction?

3. MVP

Scope and ship the smallest product that proves value to real users.

  • What is the one thing the MVP must prove?
  • What can wait until after you've learned from users?

4. Development

Engineer the full product — with an in-house team, development partners, or both.

  • Do you have the skills you need, or should you extend your team?
  • How will you plan, track and deliver the work?

5. Launch

Go to market with a managed, tracked delivery plan.

  • Who are your first customers, and how will you reach them?
  • What will you measure in the first weeks?

6. Scale

Grow the team, harden the technology and prepare to raise.

  • What breaks first as usage grows — the product, the team or the process?
  • Are you ready for investors?
